Same Sex Marriage : As everyone in Massachusetts has heard by now, the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the rights of same sex couples to marry under the state constitution. Those who know me realize that I am obviously in support of this, and have felt for years that Gay and Lesbian folks deserve the same rights and protections under the law. What I fear, of course, is the backlash that this will cause.

There are far too many Christians in this country who consider the possibility of the 10%+ of the population which they have ostracized, ridiculed and used as their scapegoats (along with Jews, Pagans and other minority group members) finally getting equal rights in our society a call to arms. I expect a raise in hate crimes, unfortunately, against all the various non-conformists for failing to follow their ancient and questionable concepts of reality and morality.

I'm not exactly a 'normal' person in the eyes of these types myself (although I am heterosexual). I am certain that my own unusual living arrangements, and those of my household, would be subject to scruitiny if we weren't living in the safe haven of Cambridge. (While other cities and towns and state governments are running around scared and seeking to stop Same Sex Marriage, Cambridge is actively seeking to be the first city in the state to grant marriage licenses for them!)

Freedom for All is a tough hurdle for a Collection of Life-Controlling Cult Leaders and their fanatical followers to accept. They need scapegoats, fear and hatred to maintain the power of their religion over the masses. I encourage all non-conformists to be a little more careful over the next few months - watch your back, pay attention to your surroundings, and don't walk the streets alone. All it takes is one or two nut-cases in a city who decide to take matters into their own hands to make life miserable for you. Paranoia is necessary when there are rabble rousers on Beacon Hill and in the Pulpit who want the publicity that such incidences give them. Remember what they did here and elsewhere over Abortion rights.

If they are allowed to strip away rights of Gay and Lesbian folks, then how long before they decide to strip away the rights of others for other reasons? It's not so long ago that mixed 'race' marriages were illegal in the United States (and part of the reason why this Pro-Gay marriage decision has gone thru is based on that prior decision that this state made first in the nation just a few decades ago). Just because you're not Gay or Lesbian, doesn't mean that this issue will not affect you at some level.

If you are interested in doing something to encourage the legislature of Massachusetts to NOT go against the court ruling, then it's time to act. I know I will be. Get thee to the Statehouse Website and contact your representative or senator and tell them that you support the right of Same Sex Couples to Marry! Also, if you have the time, dig out your telephone and leave a message with House Speaker Tom Finneran's Office (617) 727-3600 and also with Senate President Robert Travaglini's Office at (617) 722-1500.

And remember how these folks act, what they do, and how they vote on this issue. Don't be afriad of voting out a politician who doesn't listen to your desires - these folks are supposed to be voting as YOUR REPRESENTATIVE! This means if they fail, they should not keep the job! Don't be afraid to vote someone in who is an Independent or a Libertarian or a Green Party member to take their seat next time. (Voting in a Republican, considering what they've done in this country, is shear folly, obviously). If a Democrat doesn't represent your point of view on things, find someone who does (or who comes closest).

It's not too late yet, if we are lucky and diligent, to keep this country free and out of the hands of the dictator-wanna-be's.
